Training Program

Hello everyone. Welcome to the Department of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery at Yokohama City University!!

As you are now in your second year of residency, you are likely starting to think about your specialty training program.
Here, we would like to introduce the details of our surgical specialty training program. We will present it in a Q&A format to answer common questions from residents!

 Q) What should I do after graduating from residency?

A) If you aim to become a surgeon, you need to register for a Surgical Specialty Training Program to obtain surgical specialist qualifications.

Specialty resident registration for the program will begin simultaneously in December of your second year of residency. You will need to gain experience in surgeries of various organs such as the digestive system, respiratory system, heart, and breast, and fulfill the required number of cases. The required number of cases is as follows.

 Q) Which specialty training program should I register for?

A) In addition to Yokohama City University Hospital and Yokohama City University Medical Center, our department has affiliated institutions mainly in the eastern part of Kanagawa Prefecture (Yokohama, Yokosuka, and Shonan areas). (For details, click here)

You will apply for the specialty training program by choosing between a "University Hospital" or one of "our affiliated hospitals," taking into consideration your preferences and the number of applicants for that year.

University hospitals tend to "aggregate highly specialized surgeries and cases," so in reality, affiliated hospitals allow residents to experience more emergency cases (such as acute abdomen conditions like appendicitis and gastrointestinal perforation) and common diseases (such as inguinal hernias and gallstones).

In particular, the five facilities shown on the map above are all high-volume centers with around 500 beds, and they perform a leading number of surgical cases in Kanagawa Prefecture.

If you are looking for a facility in Kanagawa Prefecture where you can aim to obtain surgical specialist qualifications, please contact us at the email address below! We will provide you with detailed information about our department's specialist training program hospitals.

Q) How many cases can I experience in the specialty training program at affiliated hospitals?

A) The table above shows the actual number of surgeries performed annually by residents in their first year of specialty training at affiliated institutions. Considering that "120 cases in 3 years" are required for surgical specialist application, you can gain more than enough experience.

 O) What are the career paths after obtaining board certification in surgery?

A) After obtaining board certification in surgery, we aim to obtain board certification in gastrointestinal surgery or breast surgery (please also refer to "To all doctors interested in breast surgery") depending on the subspecialty. On the other hand, our department does not offer training for board certification in cardiovascular surgery or thoracic surgery.

Furthermore, after obtaining board certification in gastrointestinal surgery, we provide training to enable you to obtain certification as an advanced endoscopic surgeon or a highly skilled specialist in hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery. The figure below shows the number of specialists certified by our department (as of March 2024).

O) Is it possible to study abroad domestically or internationally?

A) We will introduce institutions where our department members have studied abroad within the last 5 years. Domestic study abroad includes the National Cancer Center Hospital East, RIKEN, Toranomon Hospital, and international study abroad includes the University of California, San Diego, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and The Ohio State University.

The destinations for study abroad may change sequentially, but we have a system in place to support those who wish to study abroad to write papers and conduct research.
