To all medical students and residents

The number of surgeons is currently on the decline. Reasons cited include a lack of incentives, the risk of litigation, and the modern tendency to prioritize personal time. However, is there not an unparalleled joy to be found in honing your skills, mastering complex surgeries, immersing yourself in advanced medicine and research, and curing patients who would otherwise be beyond help, receiving their gratitude in return?
Our department operates under the motto "Education First." In other words, our highest priority is to train excellent surgeons who will become the next generation of leaders in advanced medicine. Ensuring fairness in the education of young doctors is particularly important. While our affiliated educational facilities are core hospitals in Kanagawa Prefecture, offering extensive surgical experience, an unfair system would lead to the collapse of our educational structure. Therefore, junior staff members report their annual surgical case numbers each year to ensure that they can obtain specialist qualifications without unfairness. After completing your residency, if you wish, you may enroll in graduate school and engage in basic research for 3-4 years to obtain a degree. We also introduce overseas training opportunities for those who are interested. A significant feature of our department is the large number of female residents. Maintaining the careers of female surgeons will become an increasingly important issue. We intend to address this issue as a network of universities and affiliated hospitals.
The residency system is not without its drawbacks, but it also has positive aspects, such as senior members freely teaching junior members like in the old Terakoya schools. Our department retains this retro and simple atmosphere. Furthermore, as our members come from various universities across the country, there are no exclusive cliques, and we foster an open and cheerful environment. We believe that the strength of the residency system lies in facing challenges with solidarity and helping and teaching each other. We hope to remain a department that cherishes the spirit of "harmony." If you are interested in working in Yokohama or Kanagawa, please feel free to visit us for a tour.
